Famous Singer Leaves Stage After Health Scare

Lionel Richie cut his concert short on Wednesday in Saint Paul, Minnesota, after telling the audience he felt dizzy and ultimately walking off the stage — never to return — on the opening night of his joint tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.

The 77-year-old “All Night Long” singer was performing at the Grand Casino Arena when he showed signs of distress in his first hour on stage. Audience members and a journalist documented the events: Richie halted mid-song, sat down on stage, and spoke to attendees about his condition before trying to continue.

A Concert Cut Short

Journalist Patrick Kessler, who filmed the moment, posted the footage to X and said that Richie “said he felt dizzy.” Fans online shared similar accounts, all describing a performer who was clearly struggling. According to one attendee, a band member eventually told the audience that Richie was unwell and wouldn’t be coming back.

Richie sat down during his performance of “Dancing on the Ceiling.” He then moved to a piano and played “Three Times a Lady” before announcing an intermission. The break proved to be final. His band remained on stage for about 15 minutes before departing. Around 40 minutes later, saxophonist Dino Soldo delivered the news.

Soldo told the crowd, “Unfortunately, Lionel is not feeling well,” adding that he would not be able to continue and that additional information would be made available. The announcement brought the opening night of the “Sing A Song All Night Long” tour to an abrupt close.

Hospitalized as a Precaution

After leaving the stage, Richie was taken to a hospital nearby as a precaution. Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that Richie seemed “a little dehydrated” and that he hadn’t shown any signs of illness before the concert began.

A representative for the 77-year-old did not immediately comment to The Times or respond to requests for comment from other outlets. Richie himself has not publicly addressed the incident or offered any update on his condition since Wednesday evening.

A TikTok video posted on Wednesday evening by user ynaffitmocha captured Richie addressing the crowd from his seat on the stage. He joked with the audience about his discomfort, explaining that his years in the business had taught him that when feeling dizzy or strange, the smart choice is to sit down. The line drew laughter even as concern spread through the arena. Moments later, any hope of a full show disappeared.

Richie Had Been Eager for Opening Night

The medical emergency was a stark departure from Richie’s upbeat demeanor before the concert. In the days prior to opening night, he had posted enthusiastically on Instagram about returning to touring. On Tuesday, he posted on Instagram thanking his band and crew for their work getting the tour ready. “Saint Paul, here we come,” he wrote in one post.

On the day of the show itself, he posted again with visible excitement: “Rehearsals. Sound check. Showtime tonight. Saint Paul, you’re up!!!” On Thursday, he shared an Instagram carousel featuring images from early in the evening, before he fell ill. Since then, he has remained silent on social media, with no updates on his health or the tour’s status.

Chicago Date Hangs in the Balance

Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire are scheduled to perform next at the United Center in Chicago on Friday. As of Thursday evening, it remained unclear whether that date would proceed as planned. No official announcement has been made regarding any rescheduling or cancellation of the Chicago show or any subsequent tour dates.

The joint tour with Earth, Wind & Fire was intended as a summer celebration featuring Richie’s hits like “Hello,” “Say You, Say Me,” and “All Night Long” alongside the legendary group’s classics. Wednesday was meant to be a triumphant kickoff. Instead, it became a night of worry and unanswered questions.

For fans who had planned to attend the Chicago concert — and for the broader audience watching what was supposed to be a celebratory launch for one of pop music’s most enduring performers — the silence from Richie’s camp has been its own kind of answer, at least for now. Whether the 77-year-old singer will be cleared to continue, and when the tour might resume, remains to be seen.
