Popular Magician Found Dead at 26

The search for Australian magician Daniel Hidden ended in heartbreak on Wednesday, when authorities discovered the 26-year-old’s body in the rugged bushland of Mount Cougal National Park in Queensland’s Currumbin Valley — 10 days after he vanished without explanation from his Gold Coast home.

Hidden was last seen leaving his Broadbeach address at about 3 a.m. on June 14, driving a silver Hyundai Santa Fe and towing a Galaxy caravan. His disappearance was immediately flagged as out of character by those who knew him. His mother later said he seemed "not his usual self" when she last saw him, deepening concern from the earliest hours. His phone went dark roughly three hours after he was last spotted.

A Vehicle Found, a Search Begins

Two days after Hidden left Broadbeach, police located his Hyundai Santa Fe and the Galaxy caravan at a car park near Currumbin Creek Rd. The discovery triggered an immediate and large-scale response. Search headquarters were established near where the vehicle was found, and crews began combing the surrounding area — terrain that authorities described as rugged and densely vegetated, presenting formidable obstacles to searchers on foot and by air.

What followed was a major multi-agency missing-person operation. More than 100 personnel were deployed across the search zone, drawing from Queensland Police, the Australian Defence Force, the State Emergency Service, Queensland Fire Department crews, Rural Fire Service volunteers, and aerial unit Polair. Drone operators were also brought in to sweep ground that proved difficult to access otherwise. On Tuesday, Australian Defence Force personnel joined the effort as authorities pushed deeper into the hinterland, expanding their search across the park’s challenging landscape.

The operation spanned 10 days and involved extensive coordination between state and federal agencies. Search teams worked through dense vegetation and steep terrain in conditions that required specialized equipment and personnel. Volunteers from multiple emergency services organizations contributed to the effort alongside professional rescue crews and military support staff.

Family Kept Vigil Throughout

Through each day of the search, Hidden’s family remained on site. They made an emotional public appeal for his safe return, their presence a constant and painful reminder of what was at stake. When the operation concluded Wednesday morning, it was that same family who had to absorb the worst possible news.

At about 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24, Hidden’s body was found in bushland within Mount Cougal National Park, according to Queensland Police. Acting Inspector Brett Jackson, addressing the discovery, noted the family’s presence at the scene. "We have the family out on scene and obviously they’re very distraught and our thoughts are with them,” Jackson said.

Death Not Treated as Suspicious

Queensland Police confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious. A report will be prepared for the Coroner, and investigators said their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Hidden’s death remains ongoing.

Hidden had built a following as a magician in the Australian entertainment community. The multi-agency operation that worked to find him was a reflection of how seriously authorities took his disappearance — and how much those who knew him believed something was wrong from the start.

The national park where his body was ultimately recovered sits in the Gold Coast hinterland, far from the coastal suburb where he was last seen alive. Mount Cougal National Park is located in the Currumbin Valley region, an area known for its rainforest trails and waterfalls but also for terrain that can prove treacherous for searchers and hikers alike.

Investigation Continues

While the search operation has officially closed, Queensland Police have made clear that their work is not finished. The circumstances of Hidden’s death will be examined as part of the coroner’s process, offering the only remaining avenue through which his family might eventually find answers. Investigators continue to piece together the events that led to the 26-year-old magician being found in remote bushland 10 days after leaving his Broadbeach home in the early morning hours of June 14.

For now, those closest to him are left to grieve in the same place they spent more than a week hoping — and waiting.
