Trump Turns July 4th Into Massive Rally for Himself

President Donald Trump announced on June 15, 2026, that he is turning America’s 250th birthday celebration on Independence Day into what he called “the most spectacular TRUMP RALLY of them all” on the National Mall, drawing criticism for making a traditionally nonpartisan national milestone into a political event.

The president revealed his plans in a Truth Social post on Monday, declaring the July 4 event would be a "TRIBUTE TO AMERICA" taking place at the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument. Starting at 7 p.m. Eastern time, the event will showcase over 300 military band members, orchestra musicians, and ceremonial unit performers playing patriotic songs mixed with Trump’s favorite music.

“We will have none of those people that put you to sleep and constantly complain,” Trump wrote, appearing to reference artists who have publicly opposed him or withdrawn from other anniversary events.

The announcement came one day after Trump hosted a UFC fight on the White House South Lawn on June 14 to celebrate his 80th birthday, an event that drew controversy when blood was shed during matches, Trump’s personal company received promotional shoutouts, and a fighter made what witnesses described as a vile slur against former first lady Michelle Obama. The administration billed that event as part of the Freedom 250 celebrations, though it was invite-only and closed to most of the press.

According to Trump, the July 4 rally would include military flyovers and airshows with elite pilots and equipment, ending with what he called the largest fireworks display ever seen over Washington. He said he would give keynote remarks at the event, which Freedom 250’s website predicts will attract over one million attendees for a full day of programming.

The White House did not immediately respond to questions from The Daily Beast about what exactly constitutes a “Trump rally” in this context or who would be paying for what increasingly appears to be a political event funded with taxpayer dollars.

The July 4 announcement follows Trump’s earlier declaration that he would headline another rally on June 24 to kick off a summer-long celebration of American independence. That event emerged after several prominent musical acts, including country singer-songwriter Martina McBride and rapper Young MC, withdrew from performances at the Great American State Fair, scheduled to run from June 25 through July 10 on the National Mall. The artists accused the administration of turning the anniversary into a politically charged event.

Trump responded angrily to the cancellations, suggesting on social media that concerts be scrapped entirely in favor of “a giant MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN RALLY.”

The June 24 rally will take place at the Main Stage of the Great American State Fair, with doors opening at 3:30 p.m. and the program starting at 7 p.m., according to Freedom 250’s website. Performers will include the U.S. Army and Marine Corps Military Bands, tenor Christopher Macchio, and country singer Lee Greenwood, who will perform “God Bless The USA.”

Controversy has escalated over how the Trump administration is handling the semiquincentennial. Congress established the nonpartisan America 250 commission to organize anniversary celebrations, but the White House created Freedom 250 as a public-private partnership led by President Trump. Federal authorities have since distributed close to $103 million through contracts and grants to Freedom 250, an initiative that has attracted numerous corporate sponsors, Public Citizen reports.

Multiple states have chosen not to take part in the Great American State Fair. Some state officials blamed expenses as their main concern, while one representative from a state with Democratic leadership expressed worries about the event’s political slant, according to WTOP reporting.

Events marking the signing of the Declaration of Independence are typically nonpartisan celebrations focused on the country as a whole rather than representing one political party or president. Critics have accused Trump of using his office to advance personal interests and making himself the centerpiece of what would otherwise be apolitical commemorations.

This is not the first time Trump has inserted himself into Independence Day celebrations. He delivered a presidential address at the Lincoln Memorial during a “Salute to America” event in 2019 that drew criticism for his self-promotional tone and factually inaccurate historical claims, including a widely mocked assertion that American Revolutionary soldiers “took over the airports” during the war for independence.

Trump also spoke to supporters at a political rally at The Ellipse on January 6, 2021, shortly before violent rioters attacked the U.S. Capitol while invoking his name in an attempt to stop certification of the 2020 presidential election results.

The July 4 event will be staged with the backdrop of the Lincoln Memorial and the recently renovated Reflecting Pool, which Trump frequently touts as one of his achievements. However, the Interior Department acknowledged it is still cleaning “residual algae” from the pool, with the green tint re-emerging over the weekend of June 14, according to reports.

The National Park Service is separately organizing a “Salute to America 250 Celebration & Fireworks” event on the National Mall for July 4, which is meant to feature a parade, military demonstrations, and other activities ending with a traditional fireworks display. That event is free and open to the public, with advance registration encouraged. Freedom 250’s website has not yet listed Trump’s rally as an official celebration separate from the Park Service event.

The Trump administration has also launched initiatives to create commemorative government-issued items featuring the president’s image, including proposed gold coins, passports with Trump’s face, and a $250 bill bearing his likeness. During the UFC event on June 14, Trump’s family promoted a venture selling gold coins priced as high as $12,000 to profit from the spectacle.

In the previous year, Trump organized a military parade marking the Army’s 250th anniversary, which took place on the same date as his 79th birthday, adding to claims that he regularly blends national commemorations with self-promotion.
