A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder in the death of Layla Jeffery, a 13-year-old girl whose body was discovered on Thursday, July nine, in rural Victoria, days after she was reported missing. Detectives from the Missing Persons Squad announced the charge after human remains were found during a search in the small town of Donald.
The boy, whose name is being withheld by authorities, faces one count of murder in connection with the case, according to Victoria Police. Investigators said the teenager, who is from the Swan Hill area, was known to Jeffery. As of Monday, police had not disclosed her cause of death.
A Search That Ended in Bushland
Jeffery, a high school student, was last seen on McCracken Street in Donald on Saturday, July four. A family member reported her missing the following day, Sunday, July five, after she had not been heard from. What began as a search for a missing girl unfolded into something far graver over the days that followed.
A large-scale operation combed the bushland west of Byrne Street. Local officers were joined by specialist units, including the dog squad, the air wing and the search and rescue squad. Late on Thursday afternoon, that search led investigators to a body in the small town in the state’s rural west. The remains were later identified as Jeffery.
Detective Inspector Dave Dunstan of the Missing Persons Squad said investigators went to a residence in Donald around 11 a.m. Friday after obtaining a search warrant for the property. It was there that the arrest was made.
“At this location, we’ve arrested a 16-year-old youth,” Dunstan told reporters in Donald that afternoon. He added that a 53-year-old woman from Donald and a 55-year-old woman from Melbourne were assisting officers with their inquiries.
Dunstan said the teenage boy was known to both Jeffery and to police.
Charge Follows Arrest
Victoria Police confirmed the murder charge on Saturday, July 11, in a statement issued at 5:03 p.m. The boy was expected to appear before a children’s court that afternoon for a remand hearing. It remains unclear whether he has entered a plea to the charge.
The case has drawn attention in part because the accused and the victim knew one another, a detail investigators have confirmed but have not elaborated on. Police have released little about the circumstances of Jeffery’s death, and the cause remains undisclosed.

Donald resident Peta Edmunds described a town in mourning. “Our hearts are broken, and our entire community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of beautiful Layla,” she wrote on Facebook.
Jeffery’s family has been left reeling. Her aunt, Kaitlyn Cheyne, remembered her as a “very sweet and fairly shy girl.” Cheyne said that the family was devastated and struggling to cope with Jeffery’s loss, particularly given the tragic nature of her death.
A GoFundMe campaign established to help Jeffery’s family with memorial expenses and other costs had raised more than $42,000 as of Monday, a measure of the outpouring of support in the days since her death was confirmed. The fundraiser, created in the wake of the tragedy, reflects the breadth of concern and solidarity that has emerged from the wider community beyond Donald’s borders. Donations have continued to flow in from across the region and beyond as word of the case has spread.
The investigation remains active, and authorities have not indicated whether additional charges may follow. For now, the identity of the accused remains shielded under laws governing minors, and the case is set to proceed through the children’s court system. The two women assisting police had not been charged as of the most recent statement from investigators.
As the legal process begins, residents of Donald are left to grapple with a tragedy that struck one of their youngest.
