Prince Harry is more determined than ever to repair his relationship with his father, and royal watchers say that push could soon leave Prince William with little room to stand apart. Sources indicate the Duke of Sussex hopes he and King Charles will make a joint public appearance at the 2026 Invictus Games in Birmingham — perhaps at the opening or closing ceremony — a prospect that surfaced after an emotional reunion between father and son at Highgrove last month.
That reunion carried weight beyond the two men. During the Highgrove visit, King Charles met his two youngest grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, for the first time since 2021, meeting Harry, Meghan Markle and their children alongside Queen Camilla. Harry, buoyed by the encounter, now wants to arrange further meetings so his father can spend time with his grandchildren.
The gesture toward reconciliation with the king stands in stark contrast to the silence between the brothers. While Harry, Meghan and their children were with Charles and Camilla at Highgrove, William and his wife, Princess Catherine, were attending a charity polo event in Windsor, nearly 90 miles distant. The two brothers have not spoken since the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.
A Rift That Runs Deeper With William
Charles appears willing to keep the lines of communication open with his younger son. The same cannot be said, royal observers note, for the Prince and Princess of Wales. William’s relationship with Harry remains deeply strained, and palace insiders do not anticipate Harry being welcomed back into the wider family in any significant capacity.
Much of that tension traces to Harry’s 2023 memoir, “Spare,” which attacked both William and Catherine. The Waleses have since focused on royal duties and raising three children during a difficult period that included Catherine’s cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery. She is now in remission. Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond told the Mirror that more frequent UK visits by Harry to see the king will make it harder for William to avoid the issue. Bond suggested Catherine might eventually serve as peacemaker if William wanted reconciliation, though she sees no current evidence of that and cautioned that circumstances can change. Dai Davies, who led Scotland Yard’s royal protection unit in the 1990s, was more skeptical about any reconciliation between the brothers, saying that those who publicize private family matters shouldn’t expect forgiveness.
The Invictus Connection
The Invictus Games hold particular resonance for the reconciliation Harry envisions. He launched the international sporting event for wounded veterans in London in 2014, and that inaugural year drew public support from Charles, Camilla and William — a rare image of family unity now more than a decade old. Next year’s Games in Birmingham could offer a fresh stage for that kind of appearance, if Harry can convince his father to attend.
Any warming, however, sits against a backdrop of hard feelings over security. Harry and Meghan stepped back from senior royal roles in 2020 and moved to the United States, settling in Montecito, California. His protection arrangements were changed that same year, and in May 2025 he lost an appeal over the level of security he and his family receive in the UK.
In an emotional interview after that defeat, Harry said the king would not speak to him because of the security dispute and expressed a desire to move past the conflict. “There’s no point continuing to fight any more, life is precious,” he told the BBC. He also remarked that he did not know how much longer his father had — a comment that landed badly with the palace. Buckingham Palace has said the security matters were examined repeatedly and meticulously by the courts, reaching the same conclusion each time.
Peace Talks and Their Limits
Peace talks were held in London between the two camps, with Sussex representatives Maines and Maguire meeting with Andreae, the king’s press secretary. Notably, the communications team for William and Catherine was not part of those discussions — a telling omission given the state of the brothers’ relationship.
Even so, sources close to the couple have poured cold water on speculation that reconciliation means a return home. Harry and Meghan are content raising their family in California and have no plans to leave, a person close to them said. Royal commentator Charlotte Griffiths has suggested the king’s key condition is straightforward: that private conversations stay private, and that any ground rules for communication forbid Harry from repeating what is said behind closed doors.
For now, Bond described the process as one of baby steps, with Harry’s life still thousands of miles away. But she pointed to what she called Charles’s almost Shakespearean plea to his sons — a father asking that his final years not be made a misery — as a sign of how much the king would like things to be different.
