Emma Heming Willis, a model and dementia awareness advocate, says she and her family are living in a “constant state of grief” as they care for her husband, the retired actor Bruce Willis, who has frontotemporal dementia (FTD) — and she is asking the press to describe the disease accurately. Heming Willis, 50, spoke to Hello! magazine in an interview published on Monday, September 7, 2026.
“It is extremely difficult and painful,” Heming Willis said. “It’s natural — we all want our loved ones to be healthy, full of life and [be] the person they always were. But FTD is a devastating illness that steals things from you very slowly.”
Willis, 71, who was born in Idar-Oberstein, West Germany, and became a Hollywood fixture through the comedy-drama series “Moonlighting” and the “Die Hard” franchise, retired from acting in March 2022. His family disclosed at the time that he had been diagnosed with aphasia, which impairs a person’s ability to communicate. About a year later, in February 2023, the family announced that his condition had advanced and that doctors had identified frontotemporal dementia.
What She Wants Reporters to Understand
Heming Willis pointed to what she called the “immense lack of information” about dementia. One of the first questions almost everyone puts to her, she said, is whether her husband still remembers her — a pattern she called “really eye-opening.”
“My answer is always a resounding yes. Bruce doesn’t have Alzheimer’s. He has frontotemporal dementia, which affects a completely different part of the brain,” she said.
The distinction is a clinical one. Memory is usually the first thing Alzheimer’s disease erodes, whereas FTD begins in the regions of the brain that govern behavior, personality and language, according to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration. FTD is not a single illness but a family of neurodegenerative disorders caused by degeneration of the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain.
She wants that gap in coverage closed. “I wish they’d inform themselves about the different types of dementia and learn to report on them accurately, educating the public rather than feeding fear and stigma,” she said.
Misunderstandings persist, she said, because dementia has long carried shame and stigma, and she cited an estimate that cases will triple by 2050. Since announcing her husband’s diagnosis in February 2023, she has campaigned for dementia awareness and research, and on September 9, 2025, she published a memoir about caregiving, “The Unexpected Journey: Finding Hope and Purpose on the Caregiving Path.” The book debuted at No. 2 in the Advice, How-To & Miscellaneous section of the New York Times Best Seller list on September 28, 2025.
Bruce Willis’ Five Daughters
Willis and Heming Willis married in 2009 and have two daughters, Mabel Willis, 14, and Evelyn Willis, 12. He also has three adult daughters with his ex-wife, Demi Moore: Rumer Willis, 38, Scout Willis, 35, and Tallulah Willis, 32.
All five have been showing up for their father, Heming Willis said, and each has built a bond with him that belongs to her alone. The sisters are entirely different from one another, she said, yet their relationships rest on the same footing, because Willis was a dependable and unwavering figure throughout their childhoods.
Family and friends have closed ranks around him, she said, and her younger daughters watch that happen day to day. Guiding children through a serious illness is a delicate balance, she said, but she believes what they are absorbing at home amounts to a lesson in loyalty, devotion and unconditional love. They have seen her resilience and also her hardest moments, she added, and she still wrestles with guilt as a caregiver while working through the experience as it unfolds.
She also rejects the notion that a dementia diagnosis switches off a person’s life, calling the picture of unbroken misery a myth. Her family has always taken pleasure in small things, she said, a habit that has served them best on this path and left room for humor and connection. When the family laughs, she said, they laugh with her husband, never at him.

In August, Willis attended the wedding of his daughter Tallulah to Justin Acee. Vogue published a black-and-white photograph from the celebration showing Willis with an arm around Tallulah and holding Acee’s hand, his daughter leaning into his shoulder.
Tallulah Willis captioned the picture: “A tender moment with my dad, Bruce Willis, and Justin at the start of the wedding weekend.”
