First Lady Melania Trump’s office moved on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, to sever her from the uproar over the wedding celebration of Donald Trump Jr., President Donald Trump’s eldest son, saying she has never had a relationship with the Russian businessman whose money helped pay for the festivities.
“Mrs. Trump does not, and has never had, a relationship with Mr. Kremlev,” the spokesperson said. “Mrs. Trump played no role whatsoever in organizing the wedding event and was not privy to any aspect of its financial planning.”
Justin Elliott, Brett Murphy, Joshua Kaplan and Alex Mierjeski had prompted the statement with an investigation published September 14. Their reporting found that Umar Kremlev had covered hundreds of thousands of dollars of the three-day Bahamas celebration that followed the couple’s wedding. Roughly $100,000 a night went to one of two private islands, about $70,000 to a fireworks display, and more to event planning — all of it routed through IB Challenger, a Dubai entity affiliated with the boxing federation Kremlev runs and backed in part by Gazprom.
The International Boxing Association has been led since 2020 by Kremlev, 43. Russian President Vladimir Putin handed him the Order of Friendship about a month before the wedding, and days before the celebration he traveled with Putin’s delegation to China. Sanctions came from Ukraine over alleged ties to Putin and Russian security services; the United States has imposed none.
The Ceremony Came First
The distinction the Trumps are drawing rests on the calendar. Bettina Anderson and Trump Jr. exchanged vows in a small private ceremony in May. About 50 guests — Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump and Eric Trump among them — then attended the island celebration, which ran May 22 to 24. The parties, not the ceremony, were what Kremlev paid for.
The president leaned on that gap as he waved the businessman away. “I have no idea who Umar is, never heard of him, and he didn’t pay for Don and Bettina’s wedding, which took place at a totally different location, and on a different day,” he said in a White House statement. “It was an ‘after-party’ given in their honor. Not a big deal! I was not present at the party.”
On Instagram, Trump Jr. and his wife wrote that Kremlev “very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding,” calling it an “extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend.” A spokesperson for Trump Jr. told ProPublica that “Umar is a personal friend of Don.” A couple of years ago is when the two men met, according to Kremlev’s press office, which added that he does not discuss politics with his American contacts.
His brother’s camp tells it differently. Eric Trump was on the guest list and was photographed at the celebration, yet a spokesperson for him told ProPublica that “Eric has absolutely no clue who this person is.”
The arrangement worried two former counterintelligence officials who spoke with ProPublica. Frank Montoya Jr., a retired senior FBI official, said: “If I’m paying for your wedding, at some point, you’re going to owe me something.” Blunter still was Holden Triplett, who ran counterintelligence at the National Security Council in Trump’s first term: “Money is a tried-and-true method to gain access.”
A Nonanswer and a Contradiction
At a White House briefing in the Rose Garden on Tuesday, reporters asked Attorney General Todd Blanche whether the Justice Department was looking into the payments. “When you say am I investigating — Am I investigating what?” he told reporters. He had no information about Kremlev, he added, and was not certain the businessman has ties to Putin. Neither the president nor other family members know Kremlev, he also said — a claim Trump Jr.’s own account cannot be squared with.
Then the president changed the story. Reporters in the Oval Office on Friday, September 18, asked whether it was appropriate for his son to accept the spending, and Trump said: “As I understand it, he paid him back.” He added: “It’s totally allowed.” Nobody produced an amount, a date or documentation. His son’s account would also collapse under a repayment, since money that is paid back is not a gift, and the claim sits oddly beside the president’s own insistence that he had never heard of Kremlev. The White House has not addressed it, and neither has Trump Jr.
Rep. Robert Garcia, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, opened a formal investigation on Monday, September 15. His letters went to the White House and to Trump Jr., seeking their communications with Kremlev and financial records of purchases made for the wedding by foreign nationals. The relationship “raises serious national security and public corruption concerns,” he wrote, telling Trump Jr. it “may be the most serious allegation against you to date.” On Capitol Hill, FBI Director Kash Patel testified that he had not read the ProPublica report, though the bureau would analyze any relevant information.
An Earlier Public Disavowal
Her office has now issued a categorical disavowal for the second time this year. In April she rebutted claims tying her to the financier Jeffrey Epstein. “The lies linking me with the disgraceful Jeffrey Epstein need to end today,” she said on April 9. “I have never been friends with Epstein.” She had not been his victim, she said; he had not introduced her to her husband; and his plane and his island were places she had never set foot.
A Year of Few Appearances
The statement landed during a stretch in which the first lady’s schedule has drawn as much attention as her words. As of August 19 she had made 38 public appearances in 2026, and she has delivered 29 speeches since her husband returned to office, against the 130 former First Lady Michelle Obama gave over a similar period. She also did not travel on his state visit to Beijing in May, a week before the Bahamas parties; Eric and Lara Trump were aboard Air Force One instead.
Five accounts of the Bahamas celebration now stand side by side. The president says he has never heard of Kremlev — and that his son paid Kremlev back. The attorney general says no one in the family knows him. Trump Jr. and his wife call the spending a gift from a personal friend. And the first lady’s office says she had no part in the event or in how it was paid for.
