Ben Affleck Breaks Silence on Double Family Tragedy

Ben Affleck lost his mother and his father in the same year, and in a GQ interview published Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, the 54-year-old actor described what the back-to-back deaths have done to his sense of how much time anyone gets.

“It’s a big year of life. My brother [Casey Affleck] and I, our parents died just two months apart, beginning of April and June,” Affleck told GQ. “That’s a lot, man.”

The deaths of Chris and Timothy Affleck bracketed a year the brothers largely kept private. Their mother, Christopher Anne Affleck, died June 2 at age 83 at Ben Affleck’s Los Angeles home. Her death certificate listed cardiopulmonary arrest as the cause, with pancreatic adenocarcinoma among the other conditions that led to it. News of her death did not become public until July.

Six Months to Live, and One Last Wish

Chris Affleck was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2025 and given six months. She wanted to see her grandson graduate. She made it: The ceremony was held May 31, and she died two days later.

She had been a presence long before her sons were famous and after they became so. A Harvard University graduate, she taught in public schools for 35 years before retiring in 2008, and she sat in the audience at the 1998 Academy Awards with her son and actor Matt Damon when “Good Will Hunting” won Best Original Screenplay. Ben Affleck won a second Oscar as a producer of 2012’s “Argo”; Casey Affleck won Best Actor for “Manchester by the Sea.”

Affleck told GQ he keeps circling back to something his mother said near the end. She told him she had lived a good life and regretted nothing, he recalled, then added a line he has not shaken: “But I thought 83 years would feel like longer.”

A Dedication in Venice

The second death surfaced in Italy. At a press conference for his directorial feature “Company” at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival on Tuesday, Sept. 8, Oscar-winning actor and director Casey Affleck, 51, told reporters the film was dedicated to both of his parents — disclosing publicly for the first time that the brothers’ father had also died. He said he had wanted to show them the movie and never got the chance.

“I think they would’ve liked it,” he said.

As of that Sept. 8 disclosure, the date and cause of Timothy Affleck’s death had not been revealed.

The Father in Central Square

Timothy Affleck had playwright ambitions and performed with the Theater Company of Boston alongside actors Dustin Hoffman and the late Robert Duvall. He also worked as a janitor, a mechanic and a bookie. In a 2022 interview, Ben Affleck recalled his Cambridge, Mass., childhood around his father’s jobs in Central Square — the Prospect Buffet bar, where he took bets, and later the Cantab Lounge, where the brothers turned up constantly before and after his shifts.

Their parents divorced in the 1980s, when Ben was 11, and the brothers were raised primarily by their mother. Timothy Affleck struggled with alcoholism and stopped drinking in 1990; his elder son, who has spoken openly about his own drinking, told People in 2020 that his father’s three decades of sobriety amounted to the central lesson of his life.

That history did not resolve itself. Affleck told GQ his relationship with his father in Timothy’s final years was complicated and not a close one, for reasons he said he does not want to discuss publicly. What he took from it, he said, is blunt: Problems left unaddressed stay unaddressed.

Affleck first discussed the deaths publicly during a Sept. 30 appearance on the “Streets We Grew Up On” podcast, where he said the losses had sent him back through his own childhood and deepened his appreciation of his mother’s sacrifices. He expanded on that to GQ, calling his mother extraordinary and brave and saying her death pushed him to understand her life more fully. Grief, he said, has been horrible without being tragic — parents dying in old age is the order things are supposed to follow, and he said outliving his own children is the worst outcome he can imagine. It is still, he added, really sad.

After his mother’s death, Affleck traveled with his three children — Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 14, whom he shares with ex-wife Jennifer Garner. The question he said he is left with is less about mourning than about arithmetic: how he wants to spend the time that remains, now that he can see how little of it there is.
