Kamala Harris has spent this fall campaigning for Democrats, and critics online keep fixating on the way she sounds instead.
The former vice president headlined a rally Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, in Columbus, Miss., for Scott Colom, the Democrat challenging Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss. Video from the event spread quickly on social media, where critics accused her of adopting a new accent for the crowd.
The X account End Wokeness, which also amplified a clip of her Las Vegas appearance, posted on X that Harris had unveiled a new accent in Mississippi. “This might be the worst one yet,” the account wrote.
Conservative talk show host Chris Ripa shared the same video on Oct. 23 and asked what was behind the new accent.
The Line That Drew Silence
Speaking in a sparsely attended gym, Harris described the counsel she said she gives the young people she mentors — that another person’s failure to recognize what they are capable of should never cap their ambition.
The line was met with silence. Harris delivered it a second time, and the crowd responded a little more. She then told the audience that the limitation belonged to the doubters, not to them.
The clip circulating online ran 24 seconds. In it, Harris repeatedly told the room that Mississippi matters and that there were 12 days left before Election Day.
A Lower Register in Las Vegas
At a Culinary Union event in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Oct. 21, Harris told supporters that the era of feeling powerless was over because voters were 13 days away from doing something about it. She said the elections would determine who holds offices including governor of Nevada.
End Wokeness posted that video too, saying Harris appeared to be testing out a new oratory style.
Townhall writer Amy Curtis wrote that Harris delivered the remarks unusually slowly and in a lower pitch than normal, and argued that few things embarrass a politician more than putting on a different accent or cadence for different audiences. Replies piled up underneath. One user, Dudley Brown, asked whether Harris truly believes she has a fighting chance in 2028.
She Has Not Decided About 2028
The complaints began weeks earlier in Michigan. At a fireside chat hosted by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in Detroit on Tuesday, Sept. 22, Harris urged Democrats to turn out for the midterms. Clips of that appearance also raced around social media, with critics saying her delivery sounded noticeably different from her usual speaking voice.
She also addressed her own future at the Detroit event. “I have not decided if I’m going to run again,” Harris said.
Speculation about a third presidential bid has followed her through the midterm campaign. Harris dropped out of the 2020 Democratic primary before Iowa and lost the 2024 presidential election.
The Pittsburgh Version of the Same Speech
Critics made the same accusation during her 2024 presidential run, when they claimed she slipped into a Southern accent at an Atlanta rally that July and again at a Detroit rally on Labor Day. They pointed out that the delivery disappeared when she gave the same speech in Pittsburgh later that day. GOP strategist Matt Whitlock said at the time that Harris treats all of politics as performance.
President Donald Trump rallied for Hyde-Smith in Corinth, Miss., on Monday, Oct. 26.
Mississippi’s senior senator had already offered his own read before she arrived. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., said Harris is not particularly popular with a majority of voters in the state, and cast the contest as a statement about the political philosophies of the two candidates — Hyde-Smith as a mainstream Republican, Colom as a challenger closely aligned with Harris.
