Costumed students were still filling the streets of one college town after another when the gunfire started.
Three people were killed and 30 others wounded in at least six separate shootings near major university campuses across the United States over a weekend of Halloween parties, homecoming events and football rivalry games. At least six people were wounded in Newark, Del., where a gunman opened fire on a packed downtown street near the University of Delaware about 11 p.m. Oct. 31, 2026. Students in costume ran for their lives.
The shootings struck college towns in Delaware, Michigan, Colorado, Alabama, Illinois and Indiana.
Near Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington-Normal, Ill., a 19-year-old woman was killed and seven other people were wounded, one of them taken to a hospital in critical condition. Two Illinois Wesleyan students and an Illinois State University student were among the injured.
A Michael Myers Mask in East Lansing
A gunman wearing a Michael Myers mask opened fire near Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich., on Halloween night, wounding one person. Doorbell camera footage captured the scene near the campus.
A second person was wounded in a separate East Lansing shooting about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1. It was not clear whether the two shootings were related.
Two Men Tried to Get Back In
At the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo., a gunman killed a 19-year-old student and wounded a second student at a house party that drew hundreds of students, around 11:30 p.m., according to police.
Officers had already shut the party down and told the crowd to go home. About 90 minutes later, police believe, two men tried to force their way inside. Both suspects have been identified, and the Boulder Police Department released images of a person of interest wanted in connection with the shooting.
‘Two Senseless Acts’ Outside Legion Field
In Birmingham, Ala., one person was killed and eight were wounded — one of them critically — in multiple shootings in the aftermath of the 85th Magic City Classic football game on the night of Saturday, Oct. 31. The matchup pits Alabama A&M against Alabama State, both historically Black universities.
The night brought “two senseless acts of violence,” Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett said. Witnesses described chaotic scenes at a tailgate outside Legion Field shortly before 8 p.m. One person has been detained in connection with the shooting.
An AK-47-Style Pistol on a Victim
At least seven people — four men and three women — were injured on Kirkwood Avenue near the Indiana University campus in Bloomington, Ind., at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1. Officers in the popular bar strip heard “multiple gunshots” after an argument broke out in a large crowd of Halloween revelers, Deputy Chief of Police Ryan Pedigo told WTHR.
The victims range in age from 17 to 27. None of them are students, and none are from Bloomington. An 18-year-old was taken into custody, but police have not said whether he is the gunman.
Shell casings of multiple calibers were recovered from the scene, along with an AR-15-style handgun. An AK-47-style pistol was found on one of the victims, police said.
