Jeopardy! Champion’s Arrest Stuns Fans

Philip Joseph “Joey” DeSena, a two-time “Jeopardy!” winner from Raleigh, North Carolina, was arrested on December 1, 2025, on two counts of felony secret peeping. The 43-year-old development engineer is accused of installing hidden cameras in a bathroom and bedroom without someone’s consent.

According to an arrest warrant filed by the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office, the alleged incident happened on October 10, 2025, though the warrant wasn’t issued until November 26. Court documents state that DeSena unlawfully installed a camera in a bathroom to capture images of another person without their knowledge. DeSena turned himself in to the authorities in Wake County and was released from jail on December 3 after posting a $5,000 bond. He was ordered to have no contact with the victim and had to provide fingerprints and a DNA sample.

A probable cause hearing is scheduled for December 10 at Currituck County Court. Each felony charge carries a potential sentence of three to 12 months in jail. DeSena has no other serious prior criminal record.

DeSena became known to television audiences when he competed on “Jeopardy!” in November 2024. He won two games in a row, taking home a total of $44,698. His first victory on November 11, 2024, earned him $17,487. The next day, he won again, then lost his third game. His first episode created buzz when both his opponents finished with $1 after going all-in during Final Jeopardy, resulting in a controversial tie for second and third place. While competing, DeSena wore a Navy pin that had belonged to his father as a personal tribute.

In January 2025, DeSena returned to compete in the Champions Wildcard Tournament, hoping to earn a spot in the 2025 Tournament of Champions. He put up one of the tournament’s strongest quarterfinal performances, getting 20 correct answers out of 22 tries and successfully playing two Daily Doubles. However, he was knocked out in the semifinals by Drew Goins and Jen Feldman.

During his time on the show, DeSena connected with fans on “Jeopardy!” Reddit forum. In one post, he explained that he wrote “Lorelai” during a Final Jeopardy round as a message to his four-month-old daughter “so that she might see it years in the future and smile.” He also shared that host Ken Jennings told him the Final Jeopardy question was difficult and that Jennings didn’t know the answer either, which made DeSena feel better about missing it.

About wearing his father’s Navy pin, DeSena wrote on Reddit: “This was my little way of paying tribute to him on the Alex Trebek Stage. I made it, Dad.”

DeSena had applied to appear on “Jeopardy!” back in 2010. He waited more than a decade before finally getting his chance to compete in November 2024. His two winning games were taped during the same morning session. Before appearing on television, DeSena had built a following in the retro-gaming community. He worked on projects including 16 Bit Gems, Apollo Z Hack, and The Video Game Years. From 2009 to 2015, he ran a YouTube channel called ClanOfTheGrayWolf under the name “Roo.”

DeSena’s arrest isn’t the first time a “Jeopardy!” contestant has faced serious legal problems. In 2025, Winston Nguyen, another former champion, was sentenced to seven years in prison for posing as a teenager on Snapchat to get nude images and sexual videos from children. Paul Curry, who competed on the show years earlier, was convicted in 2014 for the 1994 nicotine-poisoning death of his wife. DeSena’s attorney could not be reached for comment. The case remains under investigation as it moves through the court system.
