The body of a missing triathlete has been recovered in Santa Cruz after witnesses reported seeing a shark with a human body in its mouth during a group swim in Monterey Bay, California.
Erica Fox, 55 years old, disappeared on December 21 while swimming at Lovers Point in Pacific Grove, California. She was participating in a routine swim with the Kelp Krawlers, a local swimming club she co-founded. Her husband, Jean-Francis Vanreusel, was swimming about 100 yards behind his wife with 13 other members of the club when the incident occurred.
The body was recovered Saturday, December 28, on a remote stretch of coastline south of Davenport Beach in Santa Cruz, approximately 25 miles from where Fox was last seen. The recovery came after an extensive multiagency search that covered 84 square nautical miles over 15 hours before being suspended when no additional signs were found.
Family members identified the body as Fox, who was found wearing a black wetsuit. According to Coast Guard spokesperson Christopher Sappey, a witness reported seeing a shark breach the water with what appeared to be a human body in its mouth. The shark then submerged below the waterline without resurfacing.
Fox’s father, James Fox, confirmed the identification to local media. The body was recovered by Juan Heredia, a volunteer diver with Angels Recovery, a search and rescue organization.
According to reports, Fox was still wearing a shark band on her ankle when she was found. The electromagnetic device is designed to deter shark attacks.
Fox had been married to Vanreusel for 30 years. During a memorial procession held Sunday, December 29, along the coastline, Vanreusel reflected on his wife’s approach to life and the ocean. “She didn’t want to live in fear,” he said. “She lived her life fully.”
The memorial featured a procession along the coast, mirroring Fox’s final swim, with Kelp Krawlers members participating in the tribute to their fallen co-founder.
This marks the second fatal shark attack at Lovers Point in 73 years. The previous fatal attack at this location occurred in December 1952.
The incident also represents the second attack on a member of the Kelp Krawlers swimming club in just three and a half years. Steve Bruemmer, another club member, was previously attacked and bitten on the leg but survived after being rescued by nearby paddleboarders.
The tragedy has left the close-knit swimming community grappling with questions about their future in the water. Members of the Kelp Krawlers, some of whom have been swimming at the location for more than a decade, are processing the loss while trying to determine how to move forward.
The swimming club regularly gathered at Lovers Point for their weekly ocean swims, with Fox serving as one of the group’s founding members and a central figure in the local swimming community. The triathlete was known among fellow swimmers for her commitment to the sport and her fearless approach to open water swimming in Monterey Bay.
The shark encounter occurred during what had been a routine group swim for the club members, who regularly navigate the waters off Pacific Grove as part of their training regimen. The sudden nature of the attack and the immediate disappearance of Fox prompted the massive search operation that involved multiple agencies and volunteer organizations.
California’s central coast has seen sporadic shark encounters over the years, though fatal attacks remain extremely rare. The waters off Monterey Bay are known for their rich marine ecosystem, which attracts various shark species to the area throughout the year.
The recovery of Fox’s body brings closure to a week of uncertainty for her family and the swimming community, though it leaves behind profound grief and unanswered questions about the future of open water swimming at the popular Pacific Grove location. The swimming club’s members now face the difficult decision of whether and when to return to the waters where they have trained for years, balancing their passion for the sport with the sobering reality of the risks involved in ocean swimming.
