A 69 or 70-year-old British man who also held Australian nationality was found dead on his yacht off the coast of Phuket, Thailand, on January 11, authorities said.
The man’s body was discovered aboard the Synergy Sydney vessel, which was moored opposite the Veranda Resort Phuket hotel near Khao Khad beach. A German friend, Matthias Lepke, 54, found the body in a bedroom at the bow of the yacht at 12:30 pm local time after becoming concerned about the unusually quiet vessel.
The man had not been seen for several days before the discovery, prompting Lepke to check on his friend’s whereabouts. Upon finding the body, Lepke immediately alerted staff at the Veranda Resort Phuket hotel.
Police said the body was significantly decomposed when found. Investigators believe the man had been dead for around two days before being discovered on Sunday.
Lieutenant Watcharakorn Suwan of Wichit Police Station confirmed that authorities were informed by a hotel employee. “We are currently investigating, gathering evidence, and awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death,” he said. “We have not ruled out the possibility of an unnatural death.”
Forensic officers conducted a preliminary examination at the scene and found no signs of a struggle or foul play. An autopsy is being conducted at Vachira Phuket Hospital to determine the exact cause of death. Police have collected evidence from the scene as part of their ongoing investigation.
Hotel staff revealed that the man was not a guest at the resort. According to local residents, the deceased had been living on his yacht for around a decade, regularly travelling back and forth between Thailand and Malaysia.
Both the British and Australian embassies have been notified of the death and will assist with the repatriation of the man’s remains to his family.
The case adds to recent concerns about British nationals in Southeast Asia. Mark Counsell, a 31-year-old British man from Pontypool, Wales, vanished on Christmas Day during a trip to the region. Malaysian authorities found Counsell’s body on January 7 in an incident that police said was not being treated as suspicious.
Thailand has long been a popular destination for yacht owners and sailing enthusiasts, with Phuket serving as a major hub for the marine tourism industry. The island’s east coast, where the incident occurred, is known for its calm waters and numerous anchorages that attract long-term liveaboard sailors.
Living aboard a yacht full-time has become an increasingly popular lifestyle choice for retirees and digital nomads seeking lower costs of living and the freedom to travel. Thailand’s favorable visa policies and relatively affordable marina fees have made it a preferred location for yacht dwellers from Western countries.
However, the lifestyle also presents unique challenges and risks. Liveaboard sailors often spend extended periods alone or in small communities, sometimes far from immediate medical assistance. The tropical climate can accelerate decomposition, making it more difficult to establish precise timelines in cases like this one.
Phuket has experienced various incidents involving foreign nationals in recent years. The island attracts millions of tourists annually, along with a substantial expatriate community. While most visits are uneventful, authorities occasionally investigate deaths involving foreigners, ranging from accidents to medical emergencies and, in some cases, suspicious circumstances.
The yacht community in Phuket is relatively close-knit, with sailors often looking out for one another. The fact that Lepke noticed his friend’s absence and took action to check on him reflects the informal support networks that develop among long-term liveaboards. These communities often maintain regular contact through radio communications, social gatherings at marinas, and informal check-ins.
Thai authorities have established protocols for handling deaths of foreign nationals, particularly in tourist areas like Phuket. These protocols involve coordinating with relevant embassies, conducting thorough investigations to rule out foul play, and facilitating the repatriation process for families.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death continues as authorities await the results of the autopsy. Forensic examinations in cases involving significantly decomposed remains can be complex, requiring specialized analysis to determine the cause and manner of death.
Police have not released the man’s identity pending notification of all family members. The dual British-Australian nationality may require coordination between multiple government agencies and family members in different countries.
The Veranda Resort Phuket hotel, located opposite where the yacht was moored, played a key role in alerting authorities. Hotels and resorts in the area often serve as points of contact for yacht owners who anchor nearby, providing access to shore facilities and serving as communication hubs.
As the investigation proceeds, authorities will continue gathering evidence to piece together the final days of the man’s life. The lack of signs of struggle or foul play suggests the possibility of natural causes or a medical emergency, though investigators have emphasized they are keeping all options open until autopsy results provide more definitive answers.
