Bill Gates is facing intense scrutiny following allegations contained in a massive tranche of documents related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein that the Department of Justice released on January 30, 2026. The release, spanning approximately 3 million pages, includes emails in which Epstein made explosive claims about the Microsoft founder’s personal life.
Among the most damaging allegations is a 2017 email in which Epstein threatened to expose Gates over an alleged affair with Russian mistress Mila Antonova, whom Epstein claimed Gates had left broke and sleeping on a friend’s couch. The email appears to have been part of an extortion attempt by Epstein, who sought to leverage his knowledge of Gates’ personal indiscretions.
Even more incendiary are draft emails from July 2013 that Epstein appears to have written in the voice of Boris Nikolic, a longtime science adviser to Gates who worked at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In these drafts, Epstein alleged that Gates had contracted a sexually transmitted disease from Russian girls and had requested antibiotics that he could surreptitiously give to his then-wife, Melinda French Gates. The emails suggest Epstein was attempting to create a narrative that would embarrass or compromise the billionaire philanthropist.
The Gates Foundation denied the allegations, with a spokesperson stating that the documents demonstrate only Epstein’s frustration that he did not have an ongoing relationship with Gates and the lengths he would go to entrap and defame.
The relationship between Gates and Epstein has been a subject of public interest. Gates has previously acknowledged meeting with Epstein for what he described as philanthropic purposes, but maintained the relationship was limited in scope. However, the newly released documents paint a more complex picture of their interactions and suggest Epstein viewed Gates as someone he could potentially manipulate or extort.
The revelations come at a particularly sensitive time for Gates, whose divorce from Melinda French Gates in 2022 was widely reported to have been influenced in part by his connections to Epstein. Melinda has publicly stated her discomfort with her ex-husband’s relationship with the convicted sex offender, saying she made her feelings clear at the time and regretted meeting Epstein even once.
Gates is not the only prominent figure facing renewed scrutiny following the document release. Elon Musk appears in multiple emails that suggest more extensive contact with Epstein than previously acknowledged. In a November 25, 2012, email, Musk asked about a helicopter ride to Epstein’s island and inquired about the wildest party there. His then-wife, Talulah Riley, was mentioned as accompanying him. On Christmas Day 2012, Musk sent another message asking about parties, and in November 2013, he responded affirmatively to an invitation to visit the Caribbean.
Musk denied going to the island, writing on social media that he had very little correspondence with Epstein and declined repeated invitations to go to his island or fly on his “Lolita Express.”
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick also faces questions after documents showed he visited Epstein’s island in December 2012. The revelation contradicts Lutnick’s claim in October 2025 that he cut ties with Epstein in 2005 after touring his New York townhouse. A Commerce Department spokesperson stated that Lutnick had limited interactions with Mr. Epstein in the presence of his wife and has never been accused of wrongdoing.
The documents also contain disturbing images of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, showing him on all fours over a woman. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Andrew should testify about what he knows regarding Epstein’s activities, noting that anyone who has information should be prepared to share that information in whatever form they are asked to do that.
Documents also reference Woody Allen in connection with Epstein’s activities, with emails from September 2014 and December 6, 2014, showing communication involving the filmmaker.
The release of the files represents the culmination of a process set in motion when President Donald Trump signed the Epstein Files Transparency Act on November 19, 2025. The legislation, which passed with bipartisan support, established a December 19, 2025, legal deadline for the file release. However, the Justice Department did not meet that deadline, finally releasing the documents more than a month late.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said the release fulfills the legal requirement established by the congressional law. He attributed the delay to the extensive work required to redact information that could identify victims, noting that the case involved alleged victims whose privacy needed protection.
The legislation’s passage reflected widespread public interest in understanding the full extent of Epstein’s network and activities. Steve Bannon, a close ally of Trump, had previously texted with Epstein, according to documents that showed both men’s names initially redacted before being revealed. The Epstein files have become a focal point for various political narratives, with different factions seeking to highlight connections to their opponents.
For Gates specifically, the allegations in the Epstein documents represent a significant threat to his carefully cultivated public image as a philanthropist dedicated to global health and development. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has funded initiatives in disease prevention, education, and poverty alleviation worldwide. Any damage to Gates’ reputation could potentially affect the foundation’s ability to operate effectively and maintain partnerships with governments and other organizations.
The divorce between Bill and Melinda Gates in 2022 marked the end of a marriage that had become synonymous with modern philanthropy. While the couple cited irreconcilable differences, Melinda’s subsequent comments about her ex-husband’s relationship with Epstein suggested it played a role in their separation. The newly released documents provide additional context for understanding the pressures that relationship may have placed on the marriage, particularly if Gates was concerned about potential exposure of alleged indiscretions.
Epstein’s death while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges left many questions unanswered about his activities and the full extent of his network. The convicted sex offender had cultivated relationships with numerous wealthy and powerful individuals, often hosting them at his properties. His ability to maintain these connections despite his previous conviction has been a subject of ongoing scrutiny and investigation.
The documents released by the Justice Department include not only emails but also photographs, videos, and financial records that provide insight into Epstein’s operations and relationships. However, the release has been criticized for including identifying information about some victims while heavily redacting other portions that might reveal additional details about Epstein’s associates. Some material was reportedly released by mistake, including images that should have been protected, forcing the Justice Department to take down and re-redact portions of the files.
The allegations against Gates, particularly those involving Mila Antonova, represent a complex intersection of personal misconduct, potential extortion, and the vulnerability of even the world’s most powerful individuals to blackmail. Whether Epstein actually possessed evidence to support his claims or was merely bluffing in an attempt to maintain leverage over Gates remains unclear from the documents released thus far. What is clear is that Epstein believed he had information that could damage Gates’ reputation and attempted to use it to his advantage, whether through direct extortion or as part of a broader strategy to maintain access to wealthy and influential circles.
