Missing Mother Found Alive Decades Later

A North Carolina mother who vanished during a Christmas shopping trip nearly a quarter-century ago has been found alive, leaving her family grappling with a whirlwind of emotions and profound questions about what happened that winter night in 2001.

Michele Lyn Hundley Smith was 38 years old when she left her home in Rockingham County around 8:30 p.m. on December 9, 2001, telling her family she was heading to a Kmart in Martinsville, Virginia, for Christmas shopping. She never returned. Her three children — ages 7, 14, and 19 at the time — spent the next 24 years not knowing whether to grieve or wait.

On Thursday, February 19, 2026, the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division received new information about Smith’s disappearance. The following day, Sgt. A. Disher and Detective C. Worley located Smith at an undisclosed location in North Carolina. She was alive and well. The discovery closed a case that had consumed countless hours of investigation by multiple agencies, including the FBI, DEA, and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

The disappearance had been classified as troubling from the start. Smith was a stay-at-home mother whose husband worked as a truck driver. A missing person flyer distributed at the time noted she should be considered “endangered” and “would not leave her kids by choice.” Her forest-green 1995 Pontiac Trans Sport van with North Carolina license plate ROK-N-ON was never recovered.

Amanda Smith was 14 when her mother vanished. Her father woke her around 12:30 a.m., worried that Michele hadn’t returned from what should have been a 30-minute drive. The family contacted the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, and a formal missing person report was filed on December 31, 2001. Local searches began, but neither Michele nor her vehicle surfaced.

“For years, we didn’t know if we were grieving or waiting,” said Barbara Byrd, Michele’s cousin, speaking to WFMY News 2.

The case gained renewed attention in 2018 when “The Vanished” podcast featured Michele’s disappearance, though it didn’t produce substantial leads. Amanda created a Facebook group called “Bring Michele Hundley Smith Home” to aid the search, sharing photos and updates, hoping someone would come forward with information.

Captain Marcus Marshall of the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office had previously confirmed the case remained “an active investigation” for years before Smith was located. Officials say no charges are expected.

Smith’s family has been notified of the discovery, but her current whereabouts will not be disclosed at her request. The motive for her disappearance remains unknown.

On Sunday, Amanda posted a lengthy statement on Facebook expressing the complex emotions the discovery triggered. She described being “ecstatic,” “heartbroken,” and “all over the map.” She wrestled publicly with whether she would pursue a relationship with her mother, acknowledging the profound hurt while also recognizing her mother’s humanity.

Amanda also urged the public to stop spreading accusations against her father, whom she said had been unfairly suspected for years and has now been proven innocent. Despite the pain of abandonment, she recalled the bond she shared with her mother — the smiles, the happy times together, the love she felt.

Byrd said she always believed Michele was alive. Years ago, Smith’s youngest brother asked Byrd to promise they would find her. He has since died. Speaking to local news after learning her cousin had been located, Byrd addressed him directly: “I’m going to say this out loud, she’s OK, Brian.”

Amanda’s older sister and younger brother still live in North Carolina. Their father has since remarried and continues to live in the family home in Stoneville. He struggles with health problems and finds it difficult to talk about Michele.

Byrd expressed respect for Smith’s wishes for privacy, saying she understood and was not angry. “The biggest answer I had today was she was alive,” she said. “Nothing else matters right at this moment.”

The discovery brings an end to a decades-long search but opens a new chapter filled with questions that may never be answered. For a family that spent 24 Christmases wondering what happened that December night, knowing Michele is alive provides a bittersweet closure.
