King Charles III has sent a personal message of condolence after catastrophic flooding tore through the mountainous border between Nepal and China’s Tibet region on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, joining royal households across Europe in responding to the disaster.
The catastrophe began when ice and rock gave way high in the Himalayas, unleashing a surge of water, mud and debris on the communities in the valleys below. Houses, roads and bridges were torn away along with other infrastructure, leaving whole districts cut off and rescue teams struggling to reach them. Rivers burst their banks in the flash flooding, and thick mud settled over populated areas, entombing homes and slowing the search to a crawl.
By Thursday, Nepal had confirmed at least 359 deaths, while more than 1,000 people across Nepal and Tibet were still missing. A Message Signed “Charles R.”
The king’s statement, signed “Charles R.,” was issued on behalf of both himself and Queen Camilla, although the queen was not named individually. “My wife and I are heartbroken to hear of the devastating flooding that has struck the Nepal-China border,” Charles said.
Charles said he was conscious that a great many people in Britain hold deep, personal connections to that part of the world. He offered his sympathy to families who have lost loved ones, as well as to those still waiting anxiously for word of friends and relatives. The king also honored the police officers and Armed Forces personnel killed as they responded to the disaster, praised everyone taking part in the rescue effort and said Britain was ready to provide help.

William and Catherine posted a message of their own to Instagram stories, signing it “W&C.” “The scale of the devastation along the Nepal-China border is shocking,” the couple wrote. They said their thoughts were with families facing an unbearable wait for news and with communities confronting immense loss, and they thanked those working in dangerous conditions to reach survivors.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands put out a joint statement — written in Dutch as well as English — on the official social media channel of the Dutch royal house, signed by the king and queen. The couple said the devastating effects of the flooding in Nepal were becoming ever more apparent, adding that many families are now mourning or waiting for further news, and that their thoughts are with them and with everyone involved in rescue and relief work.
Prince Albert II of Monaco spoke for himself, Princess Charlene, their family and the people of Monaco. He expressed profound sorrow over the disaster unfolding along the border between Nepal and the Chinese region of Tibet, and offered condolences to bereaved families along with what he described as full solidarity with the Nepalese people.
The King Pictured at Balmoral
After the statement went out, Charles was photographed on Thursday driving a large black car around the Balmoral estate in Scotland, dressed in a collared shirt and jacket with a security guard in the passenger seat. The king has been at Balmoral since early August and is expected to return to royal duties in early September. He was spotted there again on Friday among a line of vehicles that also carried William and Catherine, Princess Anne and Duchess Sophie, with the family making its way to a church service.
