The family around Bruce Willis understands exactly what his dementia is taking from him, and the one person who does not is Willis himself.
Emma Heming Willis, the actor’s wife, told Katie Couric in a 2024 interview for Town & Country that the couple’s daughters, Mabel Ray, now 14, and Evelyn Penn, now 12, have watched their father’s decline without her trying to soften it. “They’ve grown up with Bruce declining over the years. I’m not trying to shield them from it,” she said.
“But this disease is chronic, progressive, and terminal. There is no cure,” she said in the same interview, adding that “obviously, I don’t like to speak about the terminal side of this with them, nor have they asked,” but “they know that Daddy’s not going to get better.”
Heming Willis took Mabel Ray to one of Jay-Z’s SoFi Stadium concerts in Inglewood, Calif., which ran Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, and Saturday, Oct. 24, and posted photos and clips on Instagram. She captioned them, “Mother-daughter date night. Jay-Z edition.”
Laughing Rather Than Crying
Kevin Pollak, one of Willis’ oldest Hollywood friends, told the “Still Here Hollywood” podcast, hosted by Steve Kmetko, that Willis is surrounded by family and “because of the nature of this affliction he’s not aware that there’s an issue.” His remarks were reported Tuesday, Oct. 20.
Pollak described the world around Willis as “a bubble of love and affection,” with the children Willis has with Demi Moore and with Heming Willis all close by. “In a very strange unique way, he’s as happy as he’s ever been,” Pollak said.
“I mean, it’s heartbreaking. So rather than crying, I’m laughing at the sort of simple sweet irony of a thriving beast of a man,” he said. His account is a friend’s characterization of Willis’ situation, not a medical update from his doctors.
The family announced in March 2022 that Willis had been diagnosed with aphasia and was stepping away from acting, then said in February 2023 that the more specific diagnosis was frontotemporal dementia. Aphasia ended his career and severely limited his ability to communicate, and FTD has no current treatments. The family has said it hopes the attention on his condition pushes more awareness and research.
Heming Willis said in January, on a podcast, that her husband has anosognosia, a condition in which the brain cannot recognize its own decline. “It’s not denial,” she said. Willis lives apart from his family and receives full-time care from specialists, an arrangement she has regularly defended from trolls online.
The Spencer Tracy Whisper
Pollak met Willis through “A Few Good Men,” the 1992 courtroom drama, playing Sam Weinberg opposite Moore, then married to Willis. Willis was shooting “Death Becomes Her” on the next soundstage, and the crew learned to look for him on their stage rather than in his trailer. During a take between Pollak and Tom Cruise, with director Rob Reiner nearby, Willis leaned in and whispered that it was like watching Spencer Tracy — a note Pollak ranked among the best anyone ever gave him.
The two later worked together on “The Whole Nine Yards,” its sequel “The Whole Ten Yards” and “Hostage.” Pollak has spent time at the Idaho compound, where Willis and Moore, by then divorced, kept giant homes across the street from one another so the kids would not have far to go. On set, Willis skipped the usual star entourage; lifelong friends staffed his base camp, among them a right-hand man who once tended bar with him in New York and holds the job to this day.
A Forehead Kiss on Instagram
Tallulah Willis, 32, the youngest of Willis and Moore’s three daughters, posted an Instagram photo on Monday, Sept. 28, of herself kissing her father’s forehead and gently holding his head. She captioned it, “So cute! 😚😚,” about seven weeks after her Aug. 8 wedding.
She posted photos in June 2025 holding her father’s hand and embracing him during a family visit, and earlier that month a photo of herself on the floor, her arms around his legs as he sat on a couch. In a 2023 Vogue essay, she wrote about documenting their time together for the day he would no longer be there to remind her of it.
Hailey Wedding Drew Garfield and Liu
Tallulah Willis married musician Justin Acee on Aug. 8 at the family’s property in Hailey, Idaho, and her father took part. Wedding photos show her head on his shoulder and his arm around her, with Acee beside them holding Bruce Willis’ hand. Guests included Andrew Garfield, Lucy Liu, Ali Larter and designer Zac Posen. The couple had been dating since 2023 and announced their engagement in December 2024.
Moore posted a new set of photographs from the wedding on Instagram. “Still reminiscing on the beautiful day that was my baby @buuski’s wedding to @justinacee,” she wrote, adding, “The love between these two, the joy they share, and the incredible village that surrounds them is something I’m still feeling months later.”
Tallulah Willis told Vogue shortly after the wedding, “I am overwhelmed with gratitude and delight to begin this next chapter.”
Heming Willis said in a September interview that her husband is still very present with the family, and that moments of connection and joy keep coming despite his dementia. On Oct. 1, during World FTD Awareness Week, she posted another photo of him; his diagnosis continues to drive her advocacy, which she intends to aim at other families and caregivers living with the disease.
