Disney Guest Dies in Apparent Suicide Jump

A 31-year-old woman died in an apparent suicide at Walt Disney World’s Contemporary Resort in Orlando, Florida, on October 14, 2025, after leaving her Illinois home without notifying anyone, according to local authorities and medical examiners.

The Orange County Medical Examiner identified the victim as Summer Equitz and ruled the manner of death as suicide from “multiple blunt impact injuries.” Officials determined Equitz traveled alone from Illinois to Orlando earlier that day.

A relative raised concern in an online missing-persons post when she could not be reached. Family members had expressed worry about Equitz’s sudden departure and her decision to travel to Florida without notification.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office received reports about the death around 6:40 p.m. along North World Drive near Magic Kingdom. Authorities temporarily suspended monorail service through the building following the incident.

A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office clarified that contrary to information circulating on social media, the guest was not struck by the monorail. Police representatives told media outlets Wednesday they would not release additional information, citing the case as a suicide investigation.

Equitz celebrated her honeymoon at Walt Disney World with her husband, Nico Danilovich, in 2024. She announced she was pregnant in December 2024. She worked as a character performer and entertainment host at Disneyland between 2012 and 2015.

The Contemporary Resort features a distinctive A-frame design with the Disney monorail track running directly through the building near the lower floor. The 14-story hotel opened in 1971 alongside the Disney World property.

A similar incident occurred at the resort in 2016 when another guest died by suicide, jumping from the central A-frame tower. Disney historian Jim Hill told The New York Post that there is a “weird phenomenon” where people, often in deep emotional distress, come to Disney World to create one last happy memory.

Hill explained that severely depressed individuals sometimes book rooms at the Contemporary Resort to create one final happy family memory before taking their lives. He noted these incidents often go unreported to the public.

Walt Disney World representatives did not respond to inquiries about the incident. The investigation remains ongoing, according to authorities.

The death occurred about eight days after a woman in her 60s died after riding the “Haunted Mansion” attraction at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, on October 6, 2025. She was found unresponsive after finishing the ride and was transported to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

The “Haunted Mansion” opened in 1969 in the New Orleans Square section of Disneyland. The ride represents one of the final attractions that Walt Disney creatively contributed to before his death in 1966.

In September, Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, 32, died after riding the Stardust Racers roller coaster at Universal Epic Universe in Orlando on September 17. He was pronounced dead at a hospital that night. The theme park operates separately from Disney World.

In August, authorities discovered a toddler on a Hersheypark monorail track on August 30 in Pennsylvania. The boy was reported missing just after 5 p.m. after becoming separated from his parents. A guest quickly noticed and helped guide the child to safety. The incident did not result in death.

Theme park safety has drawn increased scrutiny following multiple incidents at major entertainment destinations. Disney operates two main resort properties in the United States: Walt Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in California.

The Contemporary Resort remains one of the most recognizable hotels at Walt Disney World due to its modernist architecture and unique integration with the monorail transportation system. The monorail connects the resort directly to Magic Kingdom park and several other Disney hotels.

Mental health professionals emphasize that suicidal ideation represents a medical emergency requiring immediate intervention. Warning signs can include sudden changes in behavior, expressions of hopelessness, and making arrangements as if preparing for a final departure.

Orange County authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding Equitz’s death. The medical examiner’s office completed its review and released its findings identifying the cause and manner of death.

Disney World attracts millions of visitors annually to its four theme parks, two water parks, and more than 25 resort hotels spread across the expansive Orlando property. The Contemporary Resort maintains its status as one of the original hotels built when the Florida destination opened.
