Jeopardy! Legend Shares Embarrassing On-Set Encounter

Ken Jennings, the current host of “Jeopardy!,” recently shared a memorable behind-the-scenes moment involving the late Alex Trebek that surprised even the longtime game show champion. During a Q&A session for his book Complete Kennections on August 12, 2025, in Lake Forest Park, Washington, Jennings opened up about his final meeting with Trebek before the legendary host’s death.

Jennings recalled encountering Trebek backstage at “Jeopardy!” shortly before his passing. Despite battling pancreatic cancer and experiencing significant pain, Trebek demonstrated remarkable professionalism when the cameras rolled. “He was, you know, sometimes in a lot of pain,” Jennings shared with the audience. “Then Johnny [Gilbert] would say his name, and like magic, he would just walk out there and be Alex Trebek, you know, 37 years of sense memory and experience, and he could just turn it on.”

The current host described asking Trebek how he was doing during that backstage encounter. Trebek’s response revealed something profound about his final months. “A lot of people don’t get to hear the nice things said about them after they’re gone. I’m still here,” he told Jennings. The exchange highlighted how Trebek’s public battle with cancer had opened his eyes to the deep connection he had forged with viewers over nearly four decades behind the podium.

Jennings explained that after Trebek announced his diagnosis, the outpouring of support was overwhelming. The longtime host received tens of thousands of pieces of mail from devoted fans. Jennings said Trebek had hosted that show for decades without really realizing what he meant to viewers, and it was only in the final months that he saw how important he was to a massive viewing audience.

The emotional farewell between the two hosts ended with an embrace. Jennings said he hugged Trebek at the end of their final conversation. That moment marked the last time Jennings would see the man who had helmed “Jeopardy!” since 1984.

Trebek died on November 8, 2020, at 80 years old from pancreatic cancer. He had continued hosting the show through October 2020. The transition from Trebek’s leadership to new leadership proved challenging for everyone involved with the production.

During the book event, Jennings reflected on the differences between his hosting style and Trebek’s legendary approach. Jennings said the difference is that he has been a contestant before. So when he sees the players, he knows the emotional state they’re in.

Jennings initially took over hosting duties alongside Mayim Bialik after Trebek’s departure. The transition period proved difficult for the new host, who felt the weight of replacing a cultural icon. In 2022, Jennings became the sole host of the game show, cementing his role as Trebek’s successor.

The current host has found ways to honor Trebek’s legacy while making the role his own. Jennings continues Trebek’s tradition of playing Turner Classic Movies in his dressing room during filming. This small gesture connects him to the host he admired and helps maintain continuity with the show’s storied past.

Jennings also revealed another touching tribute to his predecessor during a September 2, 2025, Instagram video showcasing his dressing room. He gave fans a tour of his extensive tie collection, which includes approximately 220 ties curated by head costumer Steven Zimbelman. Among these are special pieces from the Alex Trebek era that Jennings continues to wear on camera. The ties are cataloged in what the team calls the “Tie Bible,” with Trebek’s former neckwear marked with an “AT” code. Jennings explained he can look at the tag and see “AT,” meaning it’s a game-worn Alex Trebek tie, which is very special.

The adjustment to hosting after nearly 40 years of viewers seeing only one face at the podium proved challenging. Showrunner Michael Davies highlighted moments that demonstrated why the former champion was right for the role.

During the Q&A session, Jennings also provided an update on another beloved “Jeopardy!” figure: announcer Johnny Gilbert. Gilbert has never missed a show in 42 years, an impressive streak that speaks to his dedication to the program. Now in his 90s, Gilbert remains in phenomenal shape, according to Jennings. However, Gilbert no longer travels to the studio in Culver City, California, instead recording all his introductions from his home.

As Jennings continues to establish himself in the role, his connection to Trebek remains a guiding force. Whether through wearing Trebek’s ties, maintaining his dressing room traditions, or channeling the professionalism his predecessor displayed even during his darkest days, Jennings keeps Trebek’s spirit alive in the show. The current host’s unique perspective as both a record-breaking contestant and Trebek’s successor gives him insights that help him navigate the pressures of hosting one of television’s most enduring game shows.
