Brutal Stabbing Attack Leaves 9 Dead, Including 5 Children

Nine people, including five children, were killed in a stabbing attack in Richelieu, Commewijne district, Suriname on Sunday, December 28, 2025. The attack took place approximately 25 kilometers east of the capital, Paramaribo, and has left the small South American nation reeling from one of its most devastating violent incidents in recent memory.

The suspect, a 43-year-old man identified only by the initials D A, allegedly attacked his own children with a knife following a phone argument with his estranged wife. After targeting his children, the man went on to attack neighbors who came to their aid, striking victims at multiple homes throughout the residential area.

The victims ranged in age from 5 to 15 years old among the children, while neighbors who attempted to help spanned ages 7 to 80. A sixth child and another adult were seriously injured in the rampage and were transported to a hospital in Paramaribo for treatment.

When police officers responded to the scene, the suspect attempted to attack them as well. Officers initially fired warning shots in an attempt to subdue the man, but when he continued to pose a threat, they shot him in the legs. The suspect was injured during his arrest and initially taken to a hospital for treatment.

However, on Monday, January 1, 2026, authorities announced that the suspect had died by suicide while in police custody. The 43-year-old was found hanged in a cell at a police station, according to a police statement.

Surinamese President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons addressed the tragedy on her Facebook page. “I wish all the bereaved much strength, resilience, and comfort in this unimaginably difficult time,” she wrote.

Authorities indicated that the suspect may have previously received psychiatric treatment, though this information remains part of the ongoing investigation. A police spokesperson stated that “the investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event continues.” The revelation has raised questions about mental health resources and monitoring systems in the country, particularly for individuals with documented psychiatric histories.

Suriname is a former Dutch colony and the smallest independent nation in South America. With a population of approximately 600,000 people, the country has historically maintained one of the region’s lowest murder rates. The tight-knit nature of Surinamese communities means that an incident of this magnitude reverberates throughout the entire nation, touching nearly everyone either directly or through extended networks of family and friends.

However, that trend has shifted dramatically in recent times. The murder rate surged to 30 homicides per 100,000 residents in 2024, according to data gathered by the think tank InSight Crime. This represents a significant departure from the country’s traditionally peaceful reputation and has sparked concern among both residents and government officials about the underlying factors contributing to increased violence.

The attack has exposed vulnerabilities in how domestic disputes can escalate to unthinkable violence. Neighbors reported that the violence began after a phone conversation between the suspect and his estranged wife, during which they discussed arrangements for their children. The seemingly routine conversation about child custody arrangements transformed into a trigger for the deadly rampage that followed.

The targeting of multiple homes suggests the attack was not contained to a single location but spread through the neighborhood as the suspect pursued victims who attempted to intervene. This pattern indicates a sustained assault rather than a momentary loss of control, raising questions about whether warning signs were missed or if intervention opportunities existed before the situation escalated to mass casualties.

The deaths of five children in a single incident represents a particularly devastating blow to the community. In smaller nations like Suriname, where communities are closely interconnected, the impact of such tragedies extends far beyond the immediate families affected. Schools, religious institutions, and neighborhood organizations all feel the reverberations of such profound loss.

The response by neighbors who attempted to help despite the danger demonstrates the communal bonds that characterize many Surinamese neighborhoods. However, their bravery came at a terrible cost, with five neighbors losing their lives in their attempts to protect the children or stop the attacker. The wide age range of the neighbor victims, from a 7-year-old child to an 80-year-old elder, illustrates how the violence touched multiple generations within the community.

Law enforcement’s response included both attempted de-escalation through warning shots and ultimately the use of force when the suspect continued to pose an active threat to officers. The decision to shoot the suspect in the legs rather than using lethal force reflects an attempt to preserve life even in the midst of a deadly encounter, though the suspect’s subsequent death in custody has eliminated the possibility of a trial that might have provided answers to grieving families.

The incident has prompted wider discussions about domestic violence intervention, mental health services, and the resources available to families in crisis situations. As Suriname processes this tragedy, questions remain about whether systematic changes in mental health support, domestic violence prevention, and crisis intervention could help prevent similar incidents in the future.

The fact that the suspect died by suicide before facing justice means that many questions about his motivations, mental state, and the specific sequence of events may never be fully answered. For the families of the nine victims and the two survivors recovering from serious injuries, the loss of the opportunity for a trial and potential explanations adds another layer of grief to an already unimaginable situation.
