Missing Teacher Discovered Frozen to Death

A severe winter storm led to a tragic outcome in Emporia, Kansas, when Rebecca Rauber, a 28-year-old elementary school teacher, was found dead and covered in snow in a wooded area on January 25, 2026. She had disappeared during the storm which had caused extreme cold and heavy snowfall.

Rauber’s body was discovered roughly 300 yards from West 4th Avenue, not far from where she was last seen on surveillance footage walking alone early in the morning on January 23, 2026. K-9 Daisy from K-9 Search and Rescue Kansas found the body during an extensive search operation involving multiple law enforcement agencies.

“Not the outcome that we had all hoped and prayed for, but our thoughts and prayers are with that family,” said Emporia Police Chief Edward Owens, confirming the discovery to the media. “Just wish we could have found her a little sooner.”

Authorities suspect that Rauber succumbed to hypothermia shortly after she disappeared, likely within the first few hours after she left Town Royal bar without her purse, phone or jacket. She was last seen exiting the bar located at 405 Commercial Street around 11:30 p.m. on Friday.

Investigators were able to piece together Rauber’s movements from surveillance footage. She was seen walking west on West 5th Avenue and then north on Neosho Street from West 5th Avenue at approximately 11:37 p.m. on January 23. Further footage revealed Rauber in the 700 block of West 4th Avenue at around 11:44 p.m. on the same night.

The search for Rauber started as soon as she was reported missing. The Emporia Police Department used business surveillance cameras in the downtown area and coordinated with the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.

Rauber’s disappearance happened during a major snowstorm that hit the area on January 24, resulting in dangerous conditions. The temperature dropped to a chilling 3 degrees with wind chills reaching minus 13, posing severe risks to anyone caught outside without adequate protection.

An autopsy has been scheduled as part of the ongoing investigation to determine an official cause and precise time of death. Rauber’s family has been informed of the tragic discovery.

Rauber was a second-grade teacher at Riverside Elementary in the USD 253 Emporia Public Schools district. She had recently completed a master’s degree from Emporia State University in spring 2025 and held two bachelor’s degrees from the same institution in 2020.

The school district expressed deep sorrow over the loss in a statement, adding that counselors will be available for students and staff as they cope with the tragic event.

The extensive search operation for Rauber involved significant resources and personnel from multiple agencies. The Emporia Police Department expressed its gratitude for the assistance received. The operation included ground searches, K-9 units, and a systematic examination of surveillance footage from local businesses and residences.

Questions have been raised about Rauber’s decision to leave the bar without her essential belongings, like her phone and jacket. Investigators relied heavily on surveillance footage to trace her final movements, demonstrating the growing importance of such technology in modern investigations. The police had requested residents to review footage from their home security systems from Friday night.

The Town Royal bar is located in the 400 block of Commercial Street, not far from the wooded area where Rauber was found. While the wooded area might have provided some shelter from the wind, it also isolated her from potential help.

As the investigation continues, authorities will establish a complete timeline of events and determine if any additional factors played a role in the tragic incident. The autopsy results will medically confirm the cause of death and help determine when Rauber succumbed to the extreme cold.
