President Donald Trump fumbled through an uncomfortable exchange about his Valentine’s Day plans with First Lady Melania Trump aboard Air Force One, prompting fresh speculation about their relationship as viral clips highlight awkward moments between them.
When reporters asked whether he spent Valentine’s Day with his wife or bought flowers, the president responded with nervous laughter and abruptly avoided the question.
“Better not tell you that. Goodbye, everybody. That’s the toughest question,” Trump said while returning to Washington, D.C. from Mar-a-Lago, where he had spent Presidents Day weekend.
Instead of addressing his private life, Trump shifted to promoting the documentary “Melania” and commending the First Lady’s official work. He called the film “a tremendous hit,” despite box office figures that suggest otherwise.
The documentary, which follows the First Lady during the 20 days before Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025, has earned about $16.7 million at the box office. Amazon MGM Studios paid $40 million to acquire and produce the picture and spent another $35 million on marketing — a total $75 million outlay the theatrical run is unlikely to recover, according to Variety.
The film dropped sharply by 67 percent in its second weekend and kept falling in the following weeks, according to industry data. Kevin Wilson, head of distribution at Amazon MGM Studios, has said the studio expects to recoup losses via Amazon Prime Video streaming, where they think most viewers will ultimately watch it.
The Valentine’s Day back-and-forth was just the latest awkward interaction between the president and First Lady to draw attention online. At the “Melania” premiere on January 29 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the couple walked a black carpet while standing roughly a foot apart.
Commentators observed Trump seemed disengaged beside his wife at the premiere, with clips emphasizing the physical distance and stiff body language throughout the event.
One of the most talked-about incidents occurred at Trump’s military parade on June 14, 2025 — which also fell on his 79th birthday and commemorated the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary. The parade, estimated to have cost between $25 million and $45 million, was criticized for low attendance despite White House claims of 250,000 spectators. Photos showed empty bleachers and noticeable gaps in the crowd.
During the parade, Trump tried to touch Melania’s hand with his pinky in a brief gesture, but the First Lady slightly withdrew, creating a viral clip that late-night shows highlighted.
“Rejected!” exclaimed Stephen Colbert on the “Late Show,” showing footage of the awkward pinky moment to his audience and quipping that it was “risky of her” given Trump’s powers as commander in chief, according to HuffPost.
Social media buzzed with commentary about the couple’s apparent distance. Users scrutinized every frame of the viral clips, with many saying their body language didn’t resemble typical married-couple interactions.
The Trumps have been married for 21 years, since their January 22, 2005, wedding in Palm Beach, Florida. Melania has kept a much lower public profile than many former First Ladies during both of her husband’s terms. The documentary aimed to highlight her role in the administration, but critics have labeled the theatrical release a vanity project — and some raised concerns about potential conflicts given Amazon’s wide-ranging business ties with the federal government.
During the Valentine’s Day exchange, Trump defended his wife’s contributions, praising her diplomatic work with children affected by the Russia-Ukraine conflict and predicting she would “go down as one of the truly great first ladies.”
The awkward moment on Air Force One came as reporters moved on to discuss Maryland Governor Wes Moore being excluded from an upcoming National Governors Association event at the White House. Trump said Moore — the nation’s only Black governor and the incoming NGA chair — would not be invited to the traditional bipartisan dinner, along with Colorado’s Democratic Governor Jared Polis. Moore called the snub “blatant disrespect” and noted that being singled out as the only Black governor “carries an added weight.”
The documentary is scheduled to arrive on Amazon Prime Video, where studio executives hope streaming figures will help justify the large investment. The film’s theatrical release continues despite steep attendance decline, but industry analysts remain doubtful about its financial prospects.
As speculation about the couple’s relationship keeps trending on social platforms and late-night television, the White House has not publicly addressed questions about their marriage or the viral on-camera moments.
