CNN has forcefully pushed back against a wave of personal attacks from the White House aimed at one of its top journalists, after President Donald Trump berated Senior White House Correspondent Kristen Holmes during an Oval Office event on August 17. The network called Holmes “one of the most respected and accomplished journalists covering the White House” and rejected the administration’s broadsides in the strongest terms.
The confrontation unfolded during what began as a feel-good occasion. Trump had gathered reporters to honor teenage lifeguard Ryder Williams, 16, and 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai, whom Williams had rescued from a rip current at a beach in Santa Cruz, California, on July 25. The dramatic rescue went viral and eventually reached the president, who welcomed the pair warmly. Trump told the group he was honored to have them and recalled being stunned when he first watched the footage.
A Friendly Event Turns Tense
As is standard practice at such gatherings, reporters used the moment to press the president on the day’s news. Holmes first asked Trump to respond to remarks from Democratic Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff, who had said a day earlier that the president would rather travel with his aide Natalie Harp and build a new White House ballroom than do his job. Trump brushed it off, comparing Ossoff to a Pee-wee Herman lookalike and pivoting to a defense of the construction project, saying he was fixing a White House that had been neglected.
The exchange grew heated when Holmes tried to follow up on a separate topic — the president’s moves to curtail joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea. She pressed him on whether North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, had asked him to pull back on the drills. Trump did not answer. Instead, he cut her off, telling her to be quiet and calling her disrespectful.
Then came a moment that drew particular scrutiny. Trump turned to young Nathaniel Rai, who was seated on a couch beside his father, and asked the 10-year-old whether he found Holmes disrespectful. When Holmes identified herself as being with CNN and explained she was simply following up on a colleague’s earlier question about Korea, the president dismissed her as fake news and a loud, boisterous person before repeatedly ordering her to be quiet.
The White House Escalates
The clash did not stay confined to the Oval Office. The official White House Rapid Response account on X posted a video of Holmes and branded her a disgraceful, humiliating embarrassment to her profession. In a follow-up post, the account accused her of taking a cheap shot at one of the president’s staffers, writing that “these scumbags are the lowest of the low.”
What escalated the matter well beyond the usual friction between the president and the press was a post that invoked Holmes’ children. The White House account suggested her kids would someday be sickened and embarrassed by what it described as a callous and vindictive question. Bringing a reporter’s family into the fray crossed a line that critics said is rarely breached, even by an administration with a long record of clashing with the media.
CNN responded with a statement defending its correspondent. The network said Holmes had simply posed an important question relevant to current events on behalf of the public. It argued that officials are free to challenge coverage they dislike, but that personal attacks on journalists are beneath the office and at odds with the principles of a free press.
Colleagues Rally Around Holmes
Holmes’ colleagues at the network quickly came to her defense. She appeared later that day on “The Lead with Jake Tapper” and “OutFront with Erin Burnett” but did not directly address the president’s attacks. Tapper said Trump had responded as he often does with tough, smart women, while Burnett noted that Holmes’ legitimate questions had clearly hit a nerve. Cooper said the president had done that thing he does with reporters, especially women doing their jobs, and argued the question about the military drills was hardly unreasonable given the stakes for a democratically governed ally.
Treene praised Holmes as an incredible reporter, person, and mother, saying she could not understand the reaction to a journalist simply asking for the president’s response to a senator’s claim. Multiple CNN anchors and correspondents defended Holmes, with several noting Trump’s pattern of confrontations with female journalists.
The episode fits a broader pattern for the president, who has repeatedly sparred with women in the press corps. He previously admonished CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins, called Bloomberg News correspondent Catherine Lucey “quiet, piggy,” and told “60 Minutes” correspondent Norah O’Donnell she was a disgrace. Not everyone saw the exchange as troubling, though. Right-wing influencer Nick Sortor cheered the moment on X, joking that the president had chastised a reporter for screaming and even got a 10-year-old to agree.
