Family of Four Died After Eating Watermelon

A toxicology mystery that has haunted investigators across India for more than three months remains unresolved, despite forensic evidence confirming that rat poison killed all four members of a Mumbai household who shared fruit in the predawn hours of April 26.

Forensic specialists found zinc phosphide — a highly lethal rodenticide — in organ tissue taken from 44-year-old Abdullah Dokadia, his 35-year-old wife Nasreen, and their daughters Ayesha, 16, and Zainab, 13, as well as in watermelon samples recovered from their Pydhonie neighborhood apartment. Yet laboratory analysis completed in early June detected no trace of the chemical on knives, dishes, rice, chicken pulao, or herbal rat repellent collected from the home, leaving authorities with no clear pathway for contamination.

Mumbai law enforcement continues to pursue four competing explanations: murder, murder-suicide, mass suicide, and accidental exposure. Officials are awaiting Zainab’s autopsy findings and digital forensic analysis of mobile devices belonging to the deceased, while also investigating potential financial motives. The tragedy — immediately dubbed the “watermelon deaths” throughout Indian news media — sent shockwaves through produce markets, causing melon prices to plummet in Navi Mumbai, where they fell between Rs 5 and Rs 7 per kilo as vendors suffered catastrophic losses from the publicity.

Final Hours After Guests Left

On the evening of April 25, the Dokadias hosted family members for a biryani meal. After visitors left around 10:30 p.m., the household consumed watermelon between 1:00 and 1:30 a.m. — their last food.

Violent illness struck quickly, with all four suffering vomiting and diarrhea. Dr. Zaid Qureshi, a fourth-floor neighbor, responded to the emergency and discovered the youngest child in respiratory distress.

“I noticed that the youngest of the four individuals was experiencing difficulty breathing. I administered CPR. However, as her condition did not improve, she was taken to a nearby hospital. She passed away,” Qureshi told BBC Marathi.

Emergency responders transported the other three to JJ Hospital in Mumbai for urgent intervention. The youngest daughter succumbed at 10:15 in the morning on the 26th of April. Nasreen and Ayesha died soon after, and Abdullah succumbed at 10:30 p.m. that evening. Stomach washing and aggressive medical intervention failed to save any victim.

Laboratory Results Point to Rodent Poison

The deaths remained unexplained for 11 days. Mumbai’s Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) performed 54 examinations on materials seized from the apartment, including unconsumed watermelon fragments, cooking supplies, dishware, and other food products. The State Food and Drug Administration checked specimens for contamination. On May 7, the FSL delivered results to Mumbai Police showing the rat poison component zinc phosphide present in the livers, kidney tissue, spleens, stomach contents, bile, and adipose tissue of all four deceased victims — and critically, in the watermelon as well. Every other tested food came back negative.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Pravin Mundhe, a police official, said an accidental death case had been opened, with the JJ Marg police station collecting statements from relatives and neighbors. Post-mortem examinations determined zinc phosphide poisoning killed the family.

Lethal Chemical Acts Within Minutes

Medical experts explain the substance as an inorganic compound blending phosphorus and zinc, sold widely across India for rodent extermination and easily obtained. Once ingested, gastric acid transforms it into phosphine gas — a deadly vapor that circulates through the bloodstream, breaches cell walls, and shuts down cellular energy systems. Symptoms appear between half an hour and 60 minutes after exposure, including nausea, vertigo, respiratory distress, and seizures. Severe cases produce liver and kidney failure, mental confusion, and unconsciousness. Forensic authorities cited in press accounts say effective treatment demands intervention within roughly 60 minutes of contact, after which even aggressive emergency protocols rarely succeed. Internal medicine physician Dr. Hemalata Arora noted gastric lavage only functions during that narrow window. Former FSL director Dr. Rukmani Krishnamurthy pointed out the poison normally appears as powder, implying it could have been sprinkled on pre-sliced fruit. Forensic specialists Dr. Bhushan Rokade and Dr. Sanjay Surase have contributed expert commentary, with toxicology professionals speculating Zainab died first because her smaller body weight meant reduced tolerance to the toxin.

Probe Ongoing as Market Panic Spreads

Investigators say the apartment building had persistent rodent problems, but no indication emerged that rat poison was kept inside the Dokadia home. This discovery has led police to explore every possibility — whether contamination occurred by accident or deliberate poisoning. Officers arrested two fruit sellers found using rodenticide on merchandise, though no official link to the Dokadia deaths has been established.

On May 19, Mumbai Police sent fresh salt samples from the residence to the FSL for further testing. Officials now suspect the poison may have been mixed with table salt and sprinkled on the cut fruit before consumption, meaning the household might have noticed only an unusual salty taste before falling ill. More than 100 individuals have given statements to police about the deaths, which remain classified as accidental.

More than three months after the April 26, 2026 deaths, authorities still wrestle with one of modern India’s most baffling fatal poisoning investigations — a disaster that began with fruit consumed after midnight and ended with four fatalities, panic sweeping Mumbai’s fruit vendors, and riddles for forensic examiners.
