Beloved TV Actress Found Dead at 57

Melanie Watson Bernhardt, an actress best known for playing Kathy Gordon on the sitcom “Diff’rent Strokes,” died Friday, December 26, 2025, in Colorado Springs. She was 57 years old.

Her brother, Robert Watson, confirmed the actress died from bleeding complications. Watson Bernhardt had been in the hospital before her death.

Watson Bernhardt was born with osteogenesis imperfecta, commonly known as brittle bone disease. She used a wheelchair throughout her life.

The actress played Arnold’s friend Kathy Gordon on “Diff’rent Strokes” for four episodes from 1981 to 1984. The show originally aired from 1980 to 1984. Her role was written specifically for her, making her the first disabled actor to play a disabled character—a groundbreaking moment in disability representation.

Watson Bernhardt appeared alongside Gary Coleman, who played the show’s central character, Arnold Jackson.

In 1982, an episode titled “Kathy” featured her character appearing on crutches.

“I did not want to do that,” Watson Bernhardt said, recalling her reluctance to film the scene. She had experienced a bad fall years before filming.

The experience with that particular episode contributed to Watson Bernhardt becoming disillusioned with acting. After “Diff’rent Strokes” ended, she retired from the entertainment industry entirely.

In her personal life, Watson Bernhardt married Roger Bernhardt in 1994. They were married from 1994 to 1996.

Following her departure from Hollywood, Watson Bernhardt dedicated herself to advocacy work for people with disabilities. She co-founded Train Rite, a charitable organization that trains service dogs for disabled people.

Watson Bernhardt’s “Diff’rent Strokes” co-star Gary Coleman also faced significant health challenges throughout his life. Coleman had an autoimmune kidney disease that required ongoing treatment. Coleman died in 2010 at 42 years old.

Her brother Robert Watson told TMZ that doctors worked extensively to help his sister during her final hospitalization.
