Former Child Star Dies at 33 After Hit and Run

On Friday, Jan. 16, 2026, Kianna Underwood, a one-time popular child actor on Nickelodeon, was tragically killed in a hit-and-run incident in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York. At the time of her untimely death, Underwood was 33 years old.

The fatal incident took place around 6:43 a.m. at the intersection of Pitkin Avenue and Mother Gaston Boulevard. Responding to a 911 call, the police discovered that Underwood had been struck by multiple vehicles.

According to the New York Police Department reports, a black Ford Explorer SUV, traveling west on Pitkin Avenue, crossed a double yellow line to pass another vehicle. The SUV collided with Underwood as she attempted to cross the intersection.

Following the initial impact, a black and gray sedan struck Underwood, who was lying in the road. She was declared dead at the scene. Both drivers fled, and no arrests have been made as of yet. The NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad from the 73rd Precinct is actively investigating the case.

Footage from surveillance cameras during the investigation revealed the accident. Underwood’s body was located two blocks away from the initial collision point, at Pitkin Avenue and Osborn Street.

At the time of her death, police records indicate that Underwood was homeless.

Underwood began her career in the entertainment industry as a child, lending her voice to the character Fuschia Glover on the Nick Jr. show “Little Bill” from 1999 to 2004. She contributed to 23 episodes of the animated series.

In 2005, she appeared in seven episodes of Nickelodeon’s “All That,” a beloved children’s sketch comedy show. The show featured performers like Kenan Thompson, Nick Cannon, and Amanda Bynes. “All That” was Underwood’s last known role in television or film.

Apart from her television work, Underwood showcased her stage talent in the national tour of “Hairspray” as Little Inez. She also played a role in the film “The 24 Hour Woman.”

In 2023, Angelique Bates, an original cast member of “All That,” expressed concerns about Underwood’s well-being on Instagram.

“Everything that’s happening right now, I pretty much predicted,” Bates stated. “I said, are people going to wait ’til it’s too late? That she’s gone or she’s in jail?”

Bates expressed her hope that Underwood would be remembered for her talent and humor. “As much as she loved her supporters, as much as she loved the franchise, I think she would have loved to know that that love was reciprocated,” she stated.

The fatal hit-and-run highlights the ongoing problem of pedestrian safety in New York City, particularly in areas with high traffic. According to New York law, hit-and-run incidents, where drivers leave the scene without offering aid or information, carry severe legal repercussions.

Brownsville, an eastern neighborhood in Brooklyn, has grappled with various safety issues over the years. Pitkin Avenue, a major commercial artery in the area, sees substantial vehicle and pedestrian traffic throughout the day. The intersection where the accident happened is commonly frequented by locals and commuters.

The safety of marked crosswalks is a primary concern in urban areas. Under New York traffic law, pedestrians using these crosswalks have the right of way, and drivers are obligated to yield. The violation of the double yellow line in this incident poses a serious risk to both oncoming traffic and pedestrians.

The investigation into Underwood’s death continues as authorities work to identify and locate the drivers of the two vehicles involved in the deadly collision. The New York Police Department encourages anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

The loss of Underwood is a tragedy for her family, friends, the community of former child actors, and fans who remember her work on Nickelodeon programs that entertained a generation of young viewers in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
